Philip Glass / Steve Reich
images 4 music

Hatje Cantz, Euro 21
ISBN 3-7757-1596-7
Images for music – Minimal Music meets Media Art, that which crystallizes here as a fusion of digital graphic domains and acoustic spheres—has been the programmatic approach of a project on which Dennis Russell Davies and Ars Electronica have been collaborating since 2003.

This DVD is not a documentation of a particular Festival evening; rather, it is an additional, stand-alone outcome of this encounter. The pieces have been re-recorded and subsequently reprocessed by the visual artists in their studios. The live concerts did indeed serve as a point of departure, but what in numerous instances emerged in the studio situation were—as expected—many new directions and works of consummate virtuosity.

Philip Glass “Les Enfants Terribles” and Steve Reich “Piano Phase” performed on two pianos by Maki Namekawa and Dennis Russell Davies, and visuals by Dietmar Offenhuber, Norbert Pfaffenbichler and Lotte Schreiber, Casey Reas, Martin Wattenberg

Dokumentation des Klangpark 2003

Based on the idea of bringing out the connections between mainstream electronic music and leading-edge digital music’s stylistically definitive processes and concepts by showcasing the work of a representative of Sound Art who is one of the “masterminds” of this development, the Klangpark has become an annual fixture between the Brucknerhaus and the banks of the Danube.
“CODE – The Language of Our Time” was the theme of the 2003 Ars Electronica Festival. Code is the centerpiece of the work of musician/artist agf aka Antye Greie. Her encounter with codes consists not only of utilizing software as an aid to expression in her work; on a second, more general level, she delves into the verbal content of communication within them. Thus, in her dealings with codes, she simultaneously turns them around and musically scrutinizes them for verbal informational content, melody and rhythm.

Active Score Music - Scribble, Small Fish Tale

DVD
The idea of a synaestetic bonding of sound and image is a recurring motif in artistic work. Scribble by Golan Levin and Small Fish Tale by Masaki Fujihata, Kiyoshi Furukawa and Wolfgang Münch are ingenious solutions to this problem.
Scribble combines elements of graphical and music software in a dynamic and highly expressive way, and enabled this artist/musician trio to perform orchestrated as well as freely improvised music. Small Fish Tale is primarily an interactive picture that produces music.
