Since June 17, 2009, Linz’s Main Square has served as the Base Camp of “80+1 A JOURNEY AROUND THE WORLD,” a project sponsored jointly by Ars Electronica, voestalpine and Linz09. Ars Electronica 2009—“Human Nature”—and 80+1 will encounter one another for the first time on September 3, 2009 at the opening of this year’s 30th anniversary festival in what promises to be a very fortuitous convergence!

As soon as the sun dips below the horizon, the illumination of the cityscape will get switched down a notch or two in line with the watchwords “Lights Out. Starlight.” In cooperation with the ORF – Austrian Broadcasting Company’s Upper Austria Regional Studio, we’re calling upon Linzers to turn off the lights in their homes from 10 PM to 12 Midnight, and come and do some stargazing on Hauptplatz. Amateur astronomers will make their telescopes and their knowledge of the heavens available to visitors.
A great lineup of music and performances will kick off at 7 PM on the Maindeck of the Ars Electronica Center.

Fabulous creatures traverse the city and transform it into a biotope full of wonders—all of them betokening impending catastrophe and rescue.
Linz is being flooded in 2009. The Klangwolke (Cloud of Sound) follows the river all the way back to humankind’s most ancient narratives. Watery deluges, floods of information, waves of human beings. During the hours leading up to the climax, the sights and sounds of warning are unmistakable. Would it behoove Linz, the city astride the Danube, to cleanse itself? Serious and absurd prophesies collide head on. Over the course of the day, wondrous creatures stream through the cityscape; animals and mythical beings pull the public in their wake. At nightfall, the scenery in front of the Brucknerhaus will be the site of a drama at the nexus of demise and salvation.

“Pursuit of the Unheard”

The Ars Electronica Festival is celebrating its 30^th anniversary in 2009. Looking back on the festival’s musical history, we’re immediately struck by its extraordinary diversity: early electronic rock, play-along concerts featuring home-brew instruments, the Steel Symphony and the Steel Opera … Music is at the heart of this festival. The urge to discover new musics, to pioneer the exploration of fresh musical realms, to undertake daring tonal experiments is still undiminished. The pursuit of yet unheard music is ongoing.

This concert evening will be the seventh such expedition in quest of innovation. The separate concert staged in prior years to showcase current trends in digital music with performances by Prix Ars Electronica prizewinners is being integrated into the 2009 big evening concert; the result is a lineup dedicated to both the past and the present. During the first half of the evening, new technologies will share center stage with traditional genres and instruments: an “opera” performed by a tiny wireless-controlled plastic bunny, and a violin ensemble combined with 1-bit music. Audiences will then be treated to orchestral pieces by Arvo Pärt, Alan Hovhaness and Norbert Zehm visualized in ways that bring out never-before-discovered ways of seeing these sounds. The Klangpark will be filled with Bill Fontana’s sound sculptures that translate the chiming of Big Ben from the Thames to the Danube in ways that are as surreal as they are impressive. No less striking is the sound of the Max Brand synthesizer, which would actually qualify as an object in a historical exhibit but Elisabeth Schimana is still able to coax new sounds out of the old machine. The innovative acoustic combinations of Christian Fennesz paired with Lillevan’s fascinating visualizations wrap up the pursuit of the unheard for the time being …

“datamatics showed Ikeda at the height of his artistic powers, building on his own unmistakable artistic language.” – The Wire on Ryoji Ikeda, 2006
“datamatics” is the latest audiovisual concert in Ikeda’s “datamatics” series‚ an art project that explores the potential to perceive the invisible multi–substance of data that permeates our world.

Using pure data as a source for sound and visuals, datamatics combines abstract and mimetic presentations of matter, time and space in a powerful and breathtakingly accomplished work.

The technical dynamics of the piece, such as its extremely fast frame rates and variable bit depths, continue to challenge and explore the thresholds of our perceptions.

The title “Unitxt” could be read as “unit extended” referring to a unit of a rhythmic grid or universal text referring to a universal language, e.g. mathematics: units, constants, measurements, prefix-, SI-system of units and is represented in spoken word and by codes in sound itself.

In collaboration with derivative’s touch designer software the original visuals, which are based on real-time manipulation/modulation of software-generated test patterns, has been expanded to a multi-screen set-up with a highly elaborated visual outfit to form an installation of an almost immersive quality.

This special set-up has been developed for more large scale venues and festivals of high demand. So far it has had presentations at Transmediale Berlin, followed by shows at Mutek Montréal and Sonár Barcelona.

Ars Electronica Center, façade

The 5,100-square-meter glass skin of the Ars Electronica Center will become a special nighttime program highlight during the Ars Electronica Festival.

Individual artists, artist collectives and universities have been invited to use the façade’s 40,000 LEDs for artistic experiments. Five universities (Art University of Linz, University of Applied Sciences Hagenberg, TU Vienna, University of Applied Arts Vienna and University of Applied Sciences St. Pölten) as well as a series of individual artists responded to the invitation and developed projects that will be presented on the façade of the Ars Electronica Center in the evening during the week-long Ars Electronica Festival.

In order to break down technical access barriers, a special development environment was created to simplify the creation of projects for the façade – using commonly available tools. A free application enabled artists and developers to conceive their projects at their desks, simulating the visual results before going live on the façade.

Every evening during the Façade Festival, widely varying projects will be presented, covering a versatile spectrum of different approaches and divided into the program themes “Façade Music,” “Interact!” and “Visual Experiments.”

“Façade Music” shows works composed especially for the façade, or visualizations of existing pieces of music, along with a live VJ performance in conjunction with FM4.

“Interact!” enables visitors to interact with the façade: from simple texting systems to change the colors as desired to other playful approaches, including experimental interfaces.

“Visual Experiments” presents a variety of specially developed exercises that attest impressively to the many different ways the façade can be orchestrated.

In a one-of-a-kind event, FM4 and freyluft will make radio waves tangible like never before with a performance played on the pixel-like surface of the new Ars Electronica Center. The sound collage, which will be broadcast throughout the Danube Park, was created by FM4, and the light installation on the façade of the AEC by the artist duo freyluft. Visitors can not only experience this performance live, but also on the radio and on the Internet as live video stream at http://fm4.orf.at.
