u19 CREATE YOUR WORLD isn’t only the name of this future festival of the next generation; it’s also Prix Ars Electronica’s category for work by Austrian youngsters. In order to better inform festivalgoers, a mobile presentation tool is being set up. After the festival, it will be hitting the road. Now, young artists and engineers are working on it, bringing both creativity and technical skills to the job.

How do we want to get around in the future? Do we want to get from point A to point B as fast as we can or in a way that is as environmentally friendly as possible—or both? We will use simple materials (like balloons and wooden wheels) to demonstrate and experiment with basic technical phenomena like propulsion. Then, creative youngsters can try their hands at building futuristic vehicles of their own.

NANK (AT/DE) is staging four workshops and/or excursions in conjunction with u19 CREATE YOUR WORLD. high tech.high touch entails intensive use of screwdrivers and soldering irons. Youngsters will work with Nora Dibowski (AT) to build LED cubes and LED textiles together in such a way that they react to each other. The materials include compostable and thus biodegradable circuits. On the malecón von linz city walking tour, representatives of the FAB (AT) educational facility and Schwemmland (AT) association will teach youngsters about the aquaponics agricultural cycle principle and they’ll put it into practice together. outside the box – kopf schlägt kapital is the name of the game when the 3D visualization & mobile solutions experts from Friendly Fire Wien (AT) program an application for smartphones together with young people. Tateti (Spanish for cheese cupboard) is designed to facilitate people swapping things they don’t need any more. Finally, NANK throws himself into videopiracy—works with and by youngsters will be documented on video and the people of Linz will be confronted with spontaneous presentations at various spots around town.

In these Jungle Worlds media designers from Linz Art University (AT) will offer a week-long series of workshops that give youngsters a chance to get hands-on experience with simple media techniques on the computer. At Comic Life they can invent their own personal graphic narratives and formulate them as comic strips. At the Paint workshop budding artists create jungle plants right on the screen. In the Sound workshop, participants can produce jungle sounds and assemble them into an exotic sound collage.

Computers are getting smaller and more inconspicuous. As so-called wearables, they can be integrated unobtrusively into everyday objects. They’re even making incursions into our clothes. The Digital Media working group at the University of Bremen (DE) will help workshop participants develop and implement their own ideas for wearables of the future.

This “hybrid playground” is just the thing for folks who like playing video games AND hanging out in the park. Here, the real world is linked up with virtual elements. The artists of lalalab equip a tiny electronic device with network-linked sensors. On a monitor, players are given assignments that they have to carry out on the various pieces of equipment on the “real” playground. Armbands worn by the players send data to a server which computes and displays the score.

The toys tell of their dreams and wishes as well as their fears. Claudia and Ilse Trupp (AT) help kids do something new: to build their own cars, planes and other toys out of recycled materials.
