Since 2002 the Gameboy Music Club (GBMC) has been pleasuring itself acoustically on the Game Boy by Nintendo—regardless of which device generation and operating system. The nanoloop and little sound dj music programs turn the tiny console into the most economical and at the same time highest performance electronic sound instrument, a simple, user-friendly way to access the boundless world of contemporary music.

The Ars Electronica Center’s façade will be graphically graced by visuals created by Michael Mayr (AT). The accompanying sound collage is provided by Kid Soylent (AT) aka Stefan Niederwieser—DJ, author and musical editor-in-chief of The Gap magazine, as well as male midwife of the electronic, urban special ops crew named ETForce aka UTForce, specialists in locating good mixes and tracks online.

Kollegium Kalksburg (AT)

In the classic, alcohol-suffused tradition of music as sung and played by the local populace in Vienna, the three members of Kollegium Kalksburg (their roots in jazz, actually) look death square in the eyes, secure in the knowledge that the music will endure forever. Wienerlieder of the highest order, performed on contra-guitar, comb, saw and harmonica.

The ensemble’s encounter with the festival theme entails a musical response to the question of originality with respect to culture and gender. The multicultural members of the femous Orchestra play with the primal sounds of their respective homelands and bodies. This material is then sampled by White European electronic musicians (e.g. Electric Indigo), and thereby conveyed into and transformed by the hegemonic Western cultural system. But this is a two-way street—the beats disassociate themselves and remigrate to their country of origin or back to a totally different instrument. Madame Humtata (AT)

Madame Humtata, the alter ego of Chistine Hinterkörner (AT), a media designer and musician trained as a jazz & pop vocalist, stands for eccentric, feminine and exhilarating avant-garde pop. The diva’s live performances are accompanied by three musicians; the further addition of video art, light design, Humtata couture and catwalk makes each one an all-encompassing spectacle for the senses.

HGich.T (DE)

HGich.T serves up music with gnarly roots in a bizarre, hard-trance realm of magic, hits like Hauptschuhle, Tutenchamun and Tripmeister Eder astride the borderline between madness and totally overcoming inhibitions. Those seeking an acoustic definition of artistic freedom will find it here.

Daito Manabe (JP), Motoi Ishibashi (JP) & Satoru Higa (JP)

Daito Manabe (JP) and his partner Motoi Ishibashi (JP) are prizewinners in the 2011 Prix Ars Electronica’s Interactive Art category. In addition to his media art works (such as particles, a magnificent, walk-through installation currently on display in the Ars Electronica Center), Manabe is also a successful musician and visualizer who has acquired a big reputation on the international electronic music scene. His minimalistic sound pieces are reduced to the essentials, negotiating a difficult split with one foot in Groove and the other in abstraction.

POP:SCH (AT)

POP:SCH fabricates electro-pop that is as hymnal as need be, as baroque as possible and, Drehli Robnik (AT) promises, incessantly striving to achieve maximum sexuality. It takes a sing-along approach to a quadripartite theme: Viennese romances in uniform, love-lazy girlfriends, egoistic hearts and other amorous complications. If Peaches and Kim Wilde would have a love child, its name would be POP:SCH.

C60 (AT)

Despite their successful debut in 2006, this Linz electronic duo seems to have an extraordinary case of stage fright and is rarely seen/heard live. For this performance of material for their work-in-progress follow-up album, they’ve assembled a band of top-name sidemen

Cueing (AT)

Dubstep turntablist Cueing began his career as a hip-hop DJ. Now, he’s also a producer and pursues sating his weakness for low-frequency bassmonster genres like dubstep, grime and filth.

Chris de Luca (DE)

Dba Funkstörung, Chris de Luca and partner Michael Fakesch have released countless albums. Their remixes for Björk, Wu-Tang Clan, Speedy J and Plaid have garnered them international attention. Nowadays, Luca is intensively living out his love for hip-hop with friend Peabird on his first solo album entitled Tödliche Wiz Da Disko. The result: body rock for robots, a one-of-a-kind mix of old school hip-hop and cut-up beats.

Jay Scarlett (DE)

Jay Scarlett stands for a fine selection. With his band Spacek Jay Scarlett has been blending electronic beats and soulful singing for years now. As a DJ, he mixes glitch, dubstep, hip-hop and other select ingredients.

Didi Kern (AT), Richie Herbst (AT) – Sun Ra Tribute

Kern (BulBul, Fuckhead / AT) and Herbst (Regolith, Interstellar Records / AT) have dug deep into their album crate to fish out their old Sun Ra disks. The celebrated jazzman’s oeuvre made him a legend in his own lifetime.

Karl Möstl (AT)

Karl Möstl is one of the most successful figures in the Austrian electronic music scene and he’s made quite a name for himself abroad too. Möstl has mastered the art of fusing different electronic styles and creatively transcending boundaries in doing so. His 15-minute performance Origin of Sound on the Maindeck seeks answers to the question of what might have been at the beginning of all human communication: sounds, singing, rhythm, words or music? The charismatic sounds will be combined with corresponding lighting effects on the Ars Electronica Center’s façade.
Möstl will then slip into his DJ persona to present interesting electronic club & dance tracks, which will likewise be synchronized with the AEC’s LED façade.

Pröll (AT)

Seit 2004 tut sich sich der Linzer Pröll (AT), Mitbegründer und Promotor des Kulturverreins Artifex, in der musikalischen Grauzone zwischen bassigem Techno und dreckigen Beats um. Das Resultat ist eine akustische Mischung, die auch Zutaten aus der experimentellen Soundküche verträgt, ohne an Tanzbarkeit zu verlieren.

Regolith (AT)

A duo consisting of Richie Herbst (Interstellar Rec., Dilemma Records / AT) and Christian Zollner (MenKillingMen / AT). Following a phase characterized by harsh noise, they’re now into improvised soundscapes, some created on homemade equipment and turntables, all situated at the interface of deep drones and unsettlingly beautiful harmonies.

“I’m not here to entertain you” is how one of her pieces goes, and Cherry Sunkist aka Karin Fisslthaler certainly lives up to this cheeky statement. Her performance is characterized by raw tones and samples, interference and cool synthesizer sounds, set in the experimental no-man’s land at the intersection of new wave melancholy, songwriting and electric storm, borne by a multifaceted voice between charm and understatement.

Hier geht es bunt zu! u19 Exhibit zeigt die 15 GewinnerInnen des diesjährigen Prix Ars Electronica in der Kategorie u19 freestyle computing. Kreativität, Nachhaltigkeit und der Spaß daran, etwas Neues zu schaffen, stehen an oberster Stelle. Coole Animationen, stylische Webblogs und spannende Games, die von Kindern und Jugendlichen kreiert wurden, laden zum Ansehen wie auch zum Mitmachen ein – und regen die Inspiration für eigene Beiträge zum Prix Ars Electronica 2012 an.

Ein ganz besonderes Projekt ist die in Zusammenarbeit der HBLA für künstlerische Gestaltung Linz (AT) mit der HTL Leonding (AT) entstandene mehrteilige Installation Weltherberge Schulhaus. Teil dieses intelligenten Möbelensembles ist ein Bett mit einem sensorenbestückten Polster, der einem Buch ähnelt und durchgeblättert werden kann. Dieses wundersame Kissen kann Geschichten und Schlafgeräusche aufnehmen und abspielen. Dazu kommt ein Raumteiler, der mit den BesucherInnen zu kommunizieren beginnt sowie ein Tisch mit den Abdrücken verschiedener Alltagsgegenständen. Werden sie berührt, erklingen Geräusche, die sich immer zu immer wieder neuen Kompositionen kombinieren lassen.

Das von der HTL Ottakring (AT) konstruierte 3-D.Modell MicrosizeMe bietet allen, die es betreten, allerhand Abenteuer. RabbitRun, ein Flashgame von Stephan Schwarz (AT) und Karl Schauer (AT), verlangt Ausdauer und Kondition, will mensch nicht von einem riesigen Homer Simpson gefressen werden. Bei Lyzander von Paul Plessing (AT) sind hingegen aufgrund des guten Leveldesigns und der innovativen Spielmechanik Geschicklichkeit und Konzentration gefragt.

Die Animationen der diesjährigen u19 GewinnerInnen runden die Ausstellung ab. Von grafisch ausgefeilten Bildern wie sie Nikolai Maderthoner (AT) in FlugUndFall zeigt, reicht die Palette über ein zeitgenössisch-böses Rotkäppchen in der Interpretation des BG/BRG Judenburg (AT) bis zu ambitionierten Musikvideos ganz auf Höhe der Zeit.
Wunderschön auch Bernhard Riedls (AT) utopische und nachdenkliche Geschichte Die gut gemeinten Fesseln, die nicht zuletzt ob ihrer stilsicheren Zeichnungen mit dem u14-Preis bedacht wurde.
