The interplay of billions of nerve cells in the brain is what makes us thinking beings. Neuroscientists display three-dimensional images of the brain to show how they’re using state-of-the-art technology like magnetic resonance imaging to learn more about these connections and interrelationships, and to understand thought processes.

A work also featured in CyberArts 2013, Voices of Aliveness is a vocal sculpture, a so-called metamonument constructed from a collective memory. Participants ride a bike along a “shouting circuit,” a route along which they can feel free to scream their brains out.

Installation visitors become animators in Clockworld, a virtual reality installation by Benedict Bleimschein (AT) and Martin Kienmeyer (AT). They co-design the mental world of a virtual android. In the game installation re:collection, visitors are called upon to collaboratively save old data storage media like vinyl records and audio cassettes from destruction. They have to neutralize hazards and defend energy sources. This is the work of Jeremiah Diephuis, Wolfgang Hochleitner and Michael Lankes from the school’s Hagenberg Campus (AT) as well as Thomas Heller, Thomas Raffetzeder, Gernot Raudner and Manuel Wieser of Radiated Pixel (AT).

Ina Conradi Chavez (U.S. / SG) Joshua Tan (SG), Davier Yoon (SG), Jeremy Goh (SG)

Half war movie, half animated painting, this work produced jointly by Joshua Tan and Xavier Yoon blends fantastic material and historical footage into a surreal reconfiguration of the present. Ina Conradi Chavez introduces painted narrative fragments into the logic and a dream’s narrative form of progression, and gradually morphs the concrete, explicit depiction into a fragile, complexly interwoven structure.

The original proto-cell, a direct chemical ancestor of lipid membranes, soap film comprised the foam of the primordial prebiotic soup. The sensitive skin of a soap bubble is capable of swallowing laser light as if it were confined by a waveguide antenna. In this performance, bubble-trapped laser beams reveal the biomorphic molecular dynamics inside of soap film membranes.

Once set in motion, the performerʼs software gradually gains independence, while the performer, on the other hand, gradually loses control over the processes which he initially directed. The result is a runaway process whereby the system continues to develop a growing complexity.
