Ars Electronica and CERN (CH) have been jointly staging this competition for artists since 2012. The recipient receives a research/work residency split between Linz and Geneva.

Worlds Collide

The mission of the Prix Ars Electronica Collide@CERN Prize is to open up promising new dimensions for creativity in digital art in the 21st century. The collision of the artistic imagination and scientific worldviews in the world’s largest particle physics lab aims to engender truly transdisciplinary innovation.

Working in Geneva and Linz

The residency program commences with a two-month working stay at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, where the prizewinner has access to scientific competence at the highest level and personal support from scientific mentors. This is followed by a month spent at the Ars Electronica Futurelab, where the prizewinner can obtain theoretical and practical advice in bringing his/her artistic work to fruition.

2013: Bill Fontana (US)

The resulting work is then exhibited in CERN’s Globe of Science and Innovation, and at the Ars Electronica Festival in Linz. The 2012 work was Spin I by Julius von Bismarck (DE). This year’s Prix Ars Electronica Collide@CERN prizewinner is Bill Fontana (US). His work is being presented at the Big Concert Night and the CyberArts exhibition.
The competition for the third and final award in 2014 is currently underway.
