Parallel Currents

Even if the device art movement originated in Japan, closely related art & design practices have emerged totally independently since 2004 in Croatia and Slovenia as well as in the USA.

The symposium accompanying the Device Art exhibition at the Ars Electronica Center offers curators and artists from Japan, Croatia and the USA an opportunity to compare and contrast the respective currents.

Speakers

Hiroo Iwata (JP) teaches at the University of Tsukuba, and is one of the core members of the group from which the device art movement emerged in 2004.

Machiko Kusahara (JP) is professor of media art at Waseda University in Tokyo. Her research focuses on the interconnections among art, technology and culture.

Erkki Huhtamo (FI/US) is professor of media history & theory at the University of California. He is widely known as one of the founders of the discipline known as media archeology.

Sunčica Ostoić (HR) is an art historian, curator and critic, as well as a co-founder of Kontejner, a Croatian bureau of contemporary art practice.
