THU September 4 - MON September 8 2014 10 AM - 9 PM
Akademisches Gymnasium, New Building

It all began with a very fruitful mistake: Japanese artist/musician Ei Wada mistakenly connected a sound cable to a video port and thereby transformed sound into an image. Wada proceeded to take advantage of the fortuitous happenstance by recording the image with a camera and playing it back as an audio signal. This is now the technique used by Wada’s Braun Tube Jazz Band, an ensemble made up of old Braun cathode ray tube TV sets that the maestro has connected to video recorders that are, in turn, hooked up to a PC. He strikes up his Jazz Band by slapping the screens of the various TV sets. The astounding result is a powerful archaic-electronic sound reminiscent of a theremin.

FRI September 5 2014 4 PM - 5 PM
Akademisches Gymnasium, New Building, I-Center

Interested festivalgoers have long been tracking the progress of the OHMI project, which is making another appearance at the Ars Electronica Festival. Its main goal – fostering development of a one handed musical instrument for physically impaired musicians – has long since gotten underway. The competition to develop new musical instruments staged by the OHMI Trust is now in its second year and has already brought forth a whole series of fascinating prototypes.

New Instruments

Guitars, tubas, trumpets, recorders and Midi-controlled hybrid instruments are currently available to music enthusiasts. In conjunction with the Future Innovators Summit, the OHMI Trust will discuss the current state of affairs and present the instruments created to date.

Touching seeks to propagate sound in space and to carry on a dialog – of the two performers with one another as well as with the space and the sound. They animate, spatialize and modify concrete tonal material and interlink it with visuals designed especially for this performance.

SAT September 6, 2014, 8:30 PM
Donaupark Linz

The 2014 Klangwolke [Cloud of Sound] is centered on the Danube, a river through history, a stream of narratives, and a current in which European hopes and feelings flow. 25 years after the fall of the Iron Curtain that had long separated Danube neighbors Austria and Hungary, a poetic spectacle entitled Die Donau lebt! [The Danube Lives!] by Tom Roeder (DE) stages a peaceful riverside celebration.

International Three-Four Time

On the Danube, there appear, one by one, individual ships laden with musicians and groups. The musical formations come from the multifarious regions along the river’s banks. The individual ships are designed, both musically and visually, in such a way that they can later coalesce into a huge whole. For the grand finale, the various ensembles will unite to form a giant orchestra. The individual groups then take up the waltz beat and thereby bring forth an unprecedented listening experience. Immediately after the Klangwolke’s grand finale, Donaulände will become the setting of a major party.
