His gigapixel photos are usually 360º panorama pictures, created from thousands of individual photos that have been carefully stitched together. The result is an image so large that a full-size print would be the size of a house. Buildings and features up to 30km away can be seen in these images and when viewed online or interactively it is possible to zoom in to an incredible degree.

Re-Reading the City https://ars.electronica.art/postcity/en/re-reading-the-city/ Wed, 12 Aug 2015 11:40:59 +0000 https://ars.electronica.art/postcity/?p=3356 Reassuming the role of the photographer as a kind of post-flaneur, Andreas J. Hirsch casts personal views on the city reflecting the post-urban condition as such. Re-Reading the City follows hidden traces of the inner city behind the obvious city, the different cultural cities and their specific codes embedded in the same places. It uses strategies of psychogeography and situationist practices. Following pathways and losing your way are both part of the concept, as are unexpected encounters with the obvious as rediscovered in emerging views.
For Re-Reading the City photographer Andreas J. Hirsch reflects the cracks in the public image of a city, looks at the periphery of urban space in transition and at the lost dimensions of the center while exploring and commenting on the Post City.

Form/Code/Maps: Air Corridors https://ars.electronica.art/postcity/en/formcodemaps/ Mon, 10 Aug 2015 11:41:53 +0000 https://ars.electronica.art/postcity/?p=2219 The series Form/Code/Maps: Air Corridors“ consists of twenty 81×107 cm lenticular images allowing to experience areas such as landscapes, forms, space, atmosphere all in computer generated 3D images.
Arial plans of cities provide a real frame for orientation from which floating, fluctuating shapes emerge. These creations are based on virtual wireframe models which serve as containers and projection surfaces for graphical trails, drawings and textures.

Redefining emptiness

Floating artifacts, remnants of code dissolve the established views computer users have on city plans. Concentrating on the space above the plans removes the original function of them for your orientation. In previously empty areas of land, structures and interferences appear before your eyes, which help redefine what is meant by ‘City’.

1,001 Models https://ars.electronica.art/postcity/en/tausendundein-modell/ Wed, 05 Aug 2015 07:36:41 +0000 https://ars.electronica.art/postcity/?p=2006 How will the cities of the future look? The way architects and city planners are configuring them today, of course. The construction of these designs will shape the cityscape for decades to come. Much more ephemeral is mobile communication via short-lived electronic devices like smartphones. So, how can these two elements be merged into smart cities?

Model Mega-City

At POST CITY, the Ars Electronica Festival considers this question in the particular context of Austria. The point of departure for this inquiry is a sprawling model city set up in the spacious halls of PostCity, the festival’s prime venue. 1,001 Models brings together a splendid array of works by Austrian architects and urban planners, regardless of whether their concepts were actually built or only proposed. They range from a DIY prefab house to a futuristic high-rise, from houseboats to row houses, from a kindergarten to a factory.
