Combining these highly detailed, fast-forward motion pictures with the extraordinarily high degree of resolution in Deep Space 8K opens our eyes to everyday events that we’ve never seen in this form before.

American photographer Joe Capra (aka Scientifantastic) specializes in time-lapse photography in the ultra-high-resolution range. For an assignment in Rio de Janeiro, he captured the vibrant life in that Brazilian megalopolis with a PhaseOne IQ180 camera. The Ars Electronica Futurelab (AT) has now worked up this 10K (10,328 x 7,760 pixel) footage into an impressive time-lapse video.

Sun

Visitors to Deep Space 8K can experience the enormous power of the star at the center of our solar system in Michael König’s film Sun, a spinoff of his time-lapse project of the same name based on footage furnished by the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. This project developed especially for Deep Space 8K features incredibly detailed images of solar activity from 2011 to 2015. Brief info packets and a soundtrack by Mexican musician Murcof accompany the images. This project too was produced jointly with the Ars Electronica Futurelab.

Urfixed Light Animation

With its colorful mix of carousels, Ferris wheels, roller coasters and fireworks, the Urfahranermarkt, a twice-annual (spring and autumn) event staged on a fairground adjacent to the Ars Electronica Center Linz, attracts over a million visitors a year. In artist Thomas Schwarz’s time-lapse video entitled Urfixed Light Animation, the Linz native has succeeded in capturing and documenting the colorful hustle and bustle at this very popular carnival along with its transient luminous structures and tonal fragments.
