Michael et al,
The reference to Zoroaster brought, once again, to mind, that we live in a
world with basically two philosophies: that of the west... a fundamental
belief in the existence of good and evil that probably predates Zoroaster(not
much in the way of records then) but traveled westward from the 'cradle of
civilization', Sumer, the fertile Crescent, etc. and, on the other hand, the
belief that it is all the same thing: good and evil represent two extremes of
the same phenomenon, both are needed for keeping it all in balance, as it
must.
This oriental belief started from just over the mountains east of Persia and
has traveled ever further eastward.
All the 'civilized' (civil state based) cultures have been based on one ot
the other of these fundamental issues.
It has made little difference in the end: Arjuna was troubled anyway; Genghis
Khan was not (presumably) and we are not.
In the end, 'evil' is what's done by the other guy!
Now, if this discussion would get around to the arts we'd be making progress!
