Thank you Oliver for bringing the real subject in focus!
I like your contribution, esp. the last paragraph(s).
We live in a society where art comes last and education second to last,
thrown in underneath everything else even slightly cultural.
The very things that civilization is all about--freeing talented people from
food-gathering labor in order for them to engage in higher pursuits, which in
turn satisfies that gray part of our human anatomy that somehow sets us apart
from the other hunters and browsers and results in 'culture'-- are dismissed
as "frills" and too expensive.
Why should young people learn to read. Today, all that's desirable is that
they can count!
Why should people learn to think when know-it-alls' in government can make
decisions for everyone?
I think that we might take a page out of Charles Ostman's book and apply some
of our new and future options to education as well as art. If nothing else,
computers teach us to think logically. Not a bad thing these days!
