Thank you, Laurie, for speaking up fo art!
As you know, art and artists have been left far behind in this memesis
discussion. As a matter of fact, I've finally come to the conclusion
-bolstered by perusing some of the winning web sites- that the function of
"art" in many of these 'electronic art' events, is merely to provide a little
cachet to their raison d'etre.
Unless, perhaps, as a result of said memesis, we have entered an era of
creative-art-by-committee, thereby absolving the participants of all
individual responsibility!
I am still considering visiting Linz in September, if for no other reason
than to gauge the extent to which art, as such, has any validity in this
otherwise interesting venture.
I think you know my views, of how art is always exploited but rarely
supported. Especially in America. (Least true of the Netherlands, so perhaps
I've been spoiled during my formative years. I grew up thinking that the
pursuit and practice of art was, well... if not laudatory, then at least,
legitimate!)
I keep hoping that I might be proven wrong about this increasingly cynical
attitude towards the arts, but I fear it is still getting worse as the
evidence appears more universal and more common.
I fear that we are living in a world where people like the 'idea' of art
without actually liking, understanding or caring about what it means!
Glad you re-joined this discussion!
