Coincident with this year's Festival, the Ars
Electronica Center also comes into operation, giving the Ars Electronica
activities - in addition to the Festival and the Prix Ars Electronica - a
substantial new dimension. The constant availability of a first-class
infrastructure in terms of both hardware and personnel, artists-in-residence
programmes, and a powerful highspeed network, place the work of the Festival on a
new foundation. And the striking location of the Ars Electronica Center at the
heart of Linz also serves to highlight the local genesis of the Festival.
The initial impact can already be experienced this year, when in September the
immediate surroundings of the new Center will become so to speak the epicentre of
the town. With interventions and installations, live acts, performances and sound
- for 5 days and nights, accessible to all.

An interactive game for visitors. Real-life action as a
sociable counterpart to the time spent in cyberworlds. The Rolling ArtTM bowling alley incites the festival visitors to recharge with a shattering
experience come the evening - the Rolling ArtTM Tournament.
On the bowling alley which is twelve metres long, glass bottles are set up for the breaking. The alley and the splinter-proof pin chamber are equipped with contact microphones, the setting-up and rolling sounds, and the racket made by the ball demolishing the pins, are acoustically amplified. A camera located above the pinfield films the glass pins and shows
the decisive images, of the ball striking the pins,
on the monitor above the pin chamber. Pictures of the bowling action and the results are cut into the monitor via computer and transmitted live on the Internet.

Sub'tronic is music is concert is party is sound. Liveshows, Environments,
DJ'ing. Musical instruments, and the concept of the musician, have been divested
of the privileged aura or relevance, and now flap helplessly in the net of modern
sampling technology. Sub'tronic presents electronic "border commuters" in a range
that runs the gamot between modern artmusic and
ambient.
