An Art Project for the new WIFI Upper Austria Building. An extensive network of analog and digital sensors collects data on events within the building, the activities of its users and the actions of its Internet visitors, and translates them into a dynamic impression of the overall atmosphere.
unitM – User Sensitive Information Architecture
unitM represents an interactive, networked media art project as the interface between Menschen (people), Media and Machines, a communicative interplay of light and color, language and movement, that takes into account the building’s purpose as a place to impart knowledge and expertise in a field of great promise for the future. Its open, self-modifying character enables unitM to gather data from its environment, react to it, and establish contact with it.
A network of analog and digital sensors collects information on events transpiring within the building, the activities of its users, data from its immediate surroundings and actions taken by Internet visitors. A central computer network organizes and evaluates the incoming data. Its logical-abstract structure constructed on the basis of rules and patterns of behavior enables unitM to interpret the data and to form an impression of its environment. The interaction proceeds indirectly via sensors and values that are provided by the building’s central control system, or directly via the activities and actions of visitors.
The realization of unitM is an outgrowth of the idea of taking human perception into consideration as an architectural component in the conception of a building. The result is a prototype for an interactive building. Now that computerization has enabled interactivity to penetrate into seemingly all aspects of everyday life, it is high time to apply this principle—at least in the form of a prototype—to the architecture of public buildings as well. Moreover, this project addresses sociopolitically relevant aspects of a high-tech environment such as privacy and surveillance.

Ein Kunstprojekt für den Neubau des WIFI Oberösterreich. Über ein dichtes Netzwerk analoger und digitaler Sensoren werden die Ereignisse innerhalb des Gebäudes, die Aktivitäten seiner BenutzerInnen und Aktionen seiner InternetbesucherInnen erfasst und in ein dynamisches Stimmungsbild übersetzt.
unitM – User Sensitive Information Architecture
unitM steht für ein interaktives, vernetztes Medienkunstprojekt als Schnittstelle zwischen Menschen, Medien und Maschinen. Ein kommunikatives Spiel aus Licht und Farbe, Sprache und Bewegung, das der Nutzung des Gebäudes als Ort der Vermittlung von Wissen und Zukunftskompetenz Rechnung trägt. Der ihm eigene offene, sich selbst modifizierende Charakter lässt unitM seine Umgebung erfassen, auf sie reagieren und mit ihr in Kontakt treten.
Über ein Netzwerk analoger und digitaler Sensoren werden Ereignisse innerhalb des Gebäudes, die Aktivität seiner Benutzer, Daten aus seiner unmittelbaren Umwelt und Aktionen von Internetbesuchern erfasst. Ein zentrales Computernetz ordnet und bewertet die eintreffenden Daten. Seine logisch-abstrakte Struktur, aufgebaut aus Regeln und Verhaltensmustern, befähigt unitM die Daten zu interpretieren und sich einen Eindruck von seiner Umgebung zu bilden. Die Interaktion verläuft indirekt über Sensoren und Werte, die der Zentralen Leittechnik des Gebäudes entnommen werden, oder direkt über Aktivitäten und Aktionen der Besucher.
Der Realisation von unitM liegt der Gedanke zu Grunde, die menschliche Wahrnehmung als Bestandteil der Architektur in die Konzeption eines Gebäudes mit einzubeziehen. Das Resultat ist ein Prototyp für ein interaktives Gebäude. Nachdem mit der Computerisierung Interaktivität in alle Lebensbereiche der Menschen vorzudringen scheint, war es an der Zeit, dieses Prinzip zumindest prototypisch auch in der Gebäudearchitektur anzuwenden. Aber auch gesellschaftspolitisch relevante Aspekte eines hochtechnologischen Umfeldes wie zum Beispiel Privacy und Surveillance werden von diesem Projekt thematisiert.
