Gerfried Stocker and Christine Schöpf, the directors of Ars Electronica, will hold a press conference on Tuesday, August 21, 2001, to present the festival program 'TAKEOVER -
who's doing the art of tomorrow'.
The 'Digital Revolution' has given rise to new forms and manifestations of art that have situated themselves for the most part beyond the realm of the art establishment. This is a phenomenon characterized by an explosive eruption and break-out of creativity, by the innovative, inspired and often quite unexpected use of digital information technology.
Which factors are determining the art of tomorrow, where will it happen, who is doing it and with whom? Ars Electronica 2001 sets out to track the scenes, sites and protagonists of the art of tomorrow.
Art as a Test-Drive of the Future
From its very inception, Ars Electronica has defined itself as an interface, a motivating force and a catalyst of social transformation, and dedicated itself to the goal of enabling art in its full intensity and dynamism to have an impact. In doing so, Ars Electronica continuously looks to the future-there where innovation is taking shape.
What this necessitates is expanding the Festival to include forms of presenting working processes as well as production situations in which teamwork and concept-oriented communication projects occupy the spotlight.
Ars Electronica 2001 is focussing on the locations and contexts of this new creativity burst, but above all on the artists who are displaying strong commitment and facing considerable risk in opening up new territories in which their role and their scope of action have not yet been defined, and in which the existential framework conditions (art subsidies or the art market) have not yet been established-whether in the area of art or in biotechnology, in the field of artificial intelligence, in the uncharted terrain of the emerging economies or the creative sphere, in highly explosive sociopolitical settings, or in scientific, artistic and/or commercial contexts.

Im Rahmen eines Pressegesprächs am 21. August 2001 präsentieren Gerfried Stocker und Christine Schöpf als Direktoren der Ars Electronica das Festival-Programm 2001 und informieren über inhaltliche wie künstlerische Schwerpunkte von 'Takeover - wer macht die Kunst von morgen'.
Die digitale Revolution hat längst neue Formen und Ausprägungen von Kunst verursacht, deren Präsenz weitgehend außerhalb der Sphäre des Kunstbetriebs angesiedelt ist. Ein Phänomen, das von einem explosionsartigen Aus- und Aufbruch an Kreativität, von innovativer und unkonventioneller Nutzung digitaler Technologien gekennzeichnet ist.
Welche Faktoren bestimmen die Kunst von morgen, wo wird sie stattfinden, wer wird sie machen und mit wem? Ars Electronica begibt sich auf die Spuren dieser Kunst von morgen, spürt ihren ProtagonistInnen und Schauplätzen nach.
Kunst als Test-Drive für die Zukunft
Ars Electronica hat von jeher Kunst als Interface, Impulsgeber und Katalysator gesellschaftlichen Wandels definiert und sich zum Ziel gemacht, Kunst in ihrer Intensität und Dynamik zur Wirkung zu bringen. Ars Electronica blickt dabei stets in die Zukunft, dorthin, wo sich Neues abzeichnet.
Es muss verstärkt auch darum gehen, das Festival um Präsentationsformen von Arbeitsprozessen und Produktionssituationen, in denen Teamwork und konzeptorientierte Kommunikationsprojekte im Vordergrund stehen, zu erweitern.
Im Zentrum von Ars Electronica 2001 stehen die Locations und Rahmenbedingungen eines neuen künstlerischen Aufbruchs, aber vor allem jene KünstlerInnen, die mit großem Einsatz und hoher Risikobereitschaft in Terrains vorstoßen, in denen ihre Rolle und ihre Handlungsspielräume noch nicht definiert sind und in denen auch die existenziellen Rahmenbedingungen (Kunstförderung bzw. Kunstmarkt) noch nicht gegeben sind: sei es im Bereich Kunst und Biotechnologie, im Bereich Artificial Intelligence, im Neuland der Emerging Economies und der Kreativwirtschaft, auf brisanten gesellschaftspolitischen Schauplätzen, in wissenschaftlichen, künstlerischen und/oder kommerziellen Kontexten.
