Shahidul Alam (Bangladesh) has dedicated his work to the struggle against the digital divide and the reconstruction of colonialism in the digital arena. Alam is one of nominating experts in the category 'Net Vision/Net Excellence', focussing on the area of Society. In his work he is using two technologies: photography and the Internet. In 1989 Alam, who has become the most successful media activist of Bangladesh, has founded Drik Picture Library, a photo library, agency, studio, lab, gallery and training centre all in one. The Drik Learn Foundation's mission is to enduringly strengthen the ability of rural children of Bangladesh to acquire the highest quality of knowledge, is been supported among others by MIT.
His work as media activist put Alam at odds with the government, the military and other powerful interest groups. As a result, Drik had limited access to reliable and affordable means of communication. So when the Internet came along, Alam saw it as perfect tool for a developing nation short on money and resources and for media activism. Drik set up Bangladesh’s first dial-up connection and Internet service provider. In 1999 Alam has founded Meghbarta, the first web-magazine in Bangladesh. Its aim is to provide a space to build up a communication network against capital-intensive mis/dis/counter information hegemony organized by global-local powers.

Die Drik Learn Foundation, die sich im Bereich Distance Learning engagiert, wird u. a. auch vom MIT unterstützt.
Seine Arbeit als Medienaktivist hat Alam in Konflikt mit der Regierung, dem Militär und anderen Interessengruppen Bangladeshs gebracht, was ihm den Zugang zu verlässlichen Kommunikationsquellen verwehrt hat. Erst das Internet hat die Situation geändert: Alam sieht darin das perfekte Werkzeug für effektive Medienarbeit in einem Entwicklungsland, dem es an Geld und Ressourcen fehlt. So machte er Drik zum ersten Internet-Provider in Bangladesh. Sein 1999 gegründetes Web-Magazin Meghbarta, das erste seiner Art in Bangladesh, versteht sich als Netzwerk gegen die kapitalintensive Miss- und De-Informationshegemonie global-lokaler Mächte.
