Hello Andrew Garton,

This is the first time I have seen a message from someone knowledgeable
about the information/communications problems of the 'developing world'.
Thanks, this type of input was very much needed indeed!

Oddly enough, even some of the anthropologists have to be urged or taught
to resort to the net and to using email, as happened while I developed the
CD ROM "Faces of Papua New Guinea" a few years ago. It was based on the
beautiful photographs and research by Wm. C. Clarke of the sixties. Bill,
too, was then new to email! Our work was about a 'first contact'
situation, so electronic intercommunication across seemingly impassable
mountains, didn't come up. Can you tell us more about how the access you
had was provided and utilized when it was available? And what type of
solutions would be needed now? I am also curious as to the type of
information that is of the greatest interest in the developing world you
speak of. Using the internet impies literacy, and to make the most of
world-wide access, command of the English language is needed. Until
recently, short-wave radio was the most common medium for remote areas.
That was speech based and not language dependent. Has that changed? Tell
us more!

Thanks,
Josepha Haveman
