Ramsey, Shafer:
it seems to me that 'pure' information is entirely neutral, but that
propaganda (and advertising) is designed to be manipulative and commonly
intended to appear as simple information by the sender.
Either way, the meaning of the information is ultimately up to the recipient
and how it is read, believed, interpreted and applied.
The flow of information could, until recently, be almost totally controlled
and subverted by a controlling entity. When such information control peaked,
during WWII, the Nazi propaganda that replaced all other available information
in most of Europe, cost over 15 million people their lives.
In a free information flow environment, the percentage of people who do their
own thinking is usually large enough to adequately expose the worst of the
lies.
Although the flow of information can to some extent be controlled, the content
can't, however painful that often is!
Perhaps we should take a better look at how today's information content might
actually represent the state of the civilization! Apparently there is enough
support for the worst of the junk and trash that hits the net for that stuff
the thrive successfully. Else it would die out in a vacuum.
Perhaps it is time to re-examine the larger structure to see what really
supports it?
