I have just finished an audio piece with my friend and colleague Ludwig
Zeininger. The title of this piece is Metaname, it was commissioned by
Kunstradio, tha radio art program of the ORF, and I think it has some
relevance to the theme of this forum. Here's an excerpt of the text:
The META tag is an information put in the HEAD section of an HTML document.
it usually holds data for web browsers and search engines. A term submitted
to such an engine is compared to the words provided in the keywords META
tag. If matches are detected the page's url is returned. Since in many
cases thousands (or even hundreds of thousands) of urls are found, formulas
are used to rank the search results according to relevance (there's an aura
of secrecy about how these formulas work). On some commercial sites this
tag takes many pages (up to 25, that is 4/5.OOO words), in order to
influence the engine's ranking: obviously an effort to "scream louder"
turned into an act of creativity. We present a selection of META tag
keywords collected on the web recently, read by humans and text to speech
