Subject: Bit Rot! Achtung Datenverwesung!
The BitRot program
Why BitRot?
Did you ever watch yourself sitting in front of your Computer
wondering what was gonna happen when you turned it on? Wondering whether
it was still gonna work as nicely once you ended the state of promised
information and actually started the damn machine? Ever since the Data
returned from the Voyager mission started decaying, we knew that the
future was not gonna be as glorious as promised no more. It was not gonna
be possible to just download our brains and live in Cyberspace all happily
ever after. NASA=B4s method to refreeze the data onto acidfree paper
printouts won=B4t change our feeling that the wonder years are over and we
are facing the reality of Bit Rot. Or as the Germans call it:
"Datenverwesung"=20
The Half-Bit
Time=B4s Up is dedicating all its research capabilities and
efforts in order to change this horrible prospect. We see one solution only
to stop data from decaying: -The MicroBit program Time=B4s Up researchers
around the globe are working on the recognition of information before it
is complete. Once we solve the problem of how to recombine two halfbits
into one complete piece of information we feel that it is time for us to
move on and explore the world of deinformation even further. We see an
emergence of the quarterbit hard drive and the tenth bit swappable
interface.=20
The Program
In a first step we will start a program to at least freeze the BitRot
before it starts evaporating current Data.We call out to everyone
afraid of losing valuable information to turn it over to Time=B4s Up,
where we will turn it into information that it could have been. In
order to further investigate the MicroBit solution and to preserve
your data we will give you your option of deciding what it was that
your data really wanted to be, or you can let the highly qualified
technicians and research scientists at Time's Up determine the
essential nature of your data's potential using the latest in bitrot
recovery algorithms. Given that data is returning as we speak to some
kind of Freudian primal ooze-state, we attempt to apply techniques of
regression to discover other possible parallel existences of your
data.Developments are underway, but to incorporate all possible
methodologies of bitrot reappropriation, we need your data and we need
it now. Bit rot is not waiting for you, we shouldn't be either. Call
now.

Subject: ON JUNE 10, JOIN THE ONGOING VIRTUAL SIT-IN,
We are here. We do not surrender. Zapata is alive, and in spite of
everything, the struggle continues."
--Fourth Declaration of the Lacandona Jungle
ON JUNE 10, JOIN THE ONGOING VIRTUAL SIT-IN,
AGAINST THE WAR IN CHIAPAS,
FLOOD A MEXICAN GOVERMENT WEB SITE!
The Electronic Disturbance Theater plans to target an agency within the
Mexican government that has been responsible for the expulsion of
international human rights observers from Chiapas for a Virtual Sit-In. On
Wendnesday *June 10th* the next scene of Electronic Civil Disobedience
will take place between 11am to 5 pm Eastern Standard Time.
(10:00 a.m. to 4:00 pm Mexico City Time)
(4:00 to 10:00 p.m. Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)
To join the action just click this URL
http://www.nyu.edu/projects/wray/June10.html
and activate the Zapatista FloodNet between these hours. The Electronic
Disturbance Theater understands that the marked increase in deportations
of international observers since the beginning of this year, along with
new efforts to make entry into Mexico more difficult, is part of a Mexican
government's strategy to remove witnesses from the conflict zone in
Chiapas. The group sees this strategy as part of a longer term program to
pacify resource rich southern Mexico. The first step is the containment
and elimination of the Zapatista communities.=20
The Electronic Disturbance Theater opposes the
Mexican government, the Mexican elite and foreign capital that it
represents. The group supports the Zapatistas and the autonomous
indigenous communities in Chiapas and elsewhere in Mexico.
The Electronic Disturbance Theater believes that
its
electronic actions against the Mexican government are not colonialist,
as some critics have charged, but are instead anti-colonialist. The
forces of neo-colonialism and neo-liberalism in Mexico are found in
the PRI government, not in its opposition. Resistance to Mexican
neo-colonialism comes from both within and outside of Mexico's
geographic borders. The reality is that the Mexican government does
not represent the sovereign will of the Mexican people, but rather it
represents the will of Mexican elite and foreign capital.
Join the next act of Electronic Civil Disobedience on *June 10.*

Subject: transparent society
"I cannot repeat too often what history shows, that the worst modern
tyrannies arose in states whose regimes were weak and blind. In France
(1789), Russia (1917), Italy (1926), Germany (1933), Spain (1936), and
China (1949), outsiders conspired unchecked to seize power and converted
formerly impotent governments into instruments of savage repression.
Despite frequent claims to the contrary, there is no evidence that freedom
can be preserved by hobbling a democratic, constitutional government and
preventing officials from doing their jobs. Accountability through
transparency is the tool that has worked so far, but it needs constant
reinforcing and fine-tuning."=20
David Brin, The Transparent Society 1998
-- a compelling argument against much (not all) encryption and
contemporary notions of privacy...
eg.: why should the wealthy be exempt from paying their share of
taxes, thanks to encrypted off-shore transactions...
eg.: encryption coupled with e-cash could readily enable untraceable
extortion, blackmail and kidnapping crimes...=20
eg.: "the cameras on every street corner" that were accessible by
anyone could virtually eliminate urban crime and abuses of
administrative power...=20

Subject: information superiority??
Re "Pentagon war fighters must be able to fight information wars to
achieve, as he put it, "total information superiority" for the United
States. "
I can suggest several routes that might lead in that direction, steps
that are also the most likely to be ignored or skipped:
If 'superiority' is such a big issue, start with superior education of
the whole population as a basis. A people who are well informed and
have been taught to think for themselves would be well on their way
towards the stated goal. A nation in which education is not valued or
respected is not likely to gain superiority in much of anything.
If information is all important, make sure that the nation's
population learns to recognize 'information' when it meets up with it
and can distinguish useful information from the useless and too often
misleading propaganda with which it is being bombarded day and night.
If the nation's information defense system is being breached, it is
obviously inadequately fortified. Learn how to secure it better; hire
the young people who have an obvious talent for this field to show the
services how it is done!
As I see it, this is not a matter of superiority but of adequacy. Send
these soldier-programmers back to school. Not just to sharpen their
digital skills, but to learn more about the rest of the worlds with
which they must interact -whether offensively, defensively or, in
apparently the toughest manner, co- operatively!
Americans never seem to know that other cultures might have different
priorities or values; that others think differently and operate
differently. (Neither did most of the colonialists whose empires so
recently collapsed.) Not only does this mean that these differences are
not taught to the people who need to know, but no allowance is made for
the existence if innate differences. On the contrary, the "American Way"
is what is considered so superior that the general attitude is that this
'Way must be imposed on the rest of the world, sometimes at all costs!=20
I can't but help feeling glad when, on occasion, it is discovered in
Washington that the U.S. does not have the "superiority" it so covets.
My suggestion, ultimately is simple: you want superiority? Earn it!
Not with machines, whether for information or for destruction. Earn it
with the workings of the cranium! Learn to think, to understand, to
co-operate!
