Benjamin Weil
Benjamin Weil was appointed Curatorial Chair of Eyebeam in January 2003, after serving on Eyebeam´s curatorial committee since 2002. He oversees the curatorial direction of Eyebeam's varied programming in the areas of exhibition, education, research, and production.
As media curator at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, he co-curated 010101: Art in Technological Times (2001), with a more specific focus on the web commissions. He has also developed a program of media arts commissions for the museum, producing new work by Christian Marclay (2002), Kristin Oppenheim (2003), and Pipilotti Rist (2004). Benjamin is also the guest curator for the 2004 edition of the Paris-based biennial new media festival, Villette Numerique.
In 1994, he co-founded áda 'web, the first digital foundry, supporting the production and online presentation of web projects by such contemporary visual artists as Doug Aitken, Jenny Holzer, Julia Scher, and Lawrence Weiner, and also featuring works of such network media pioneers as JODI and Michael Samyn. Prior to that, he was among the founding members of The Thing (1991), an interactive computer network that focuses on contemporary art and cultural theory. Benjamin serves on the selection committee of Etants-Donnés: The French American Cultural Fund. More recently, he also joined the board of advisors of T-B A21, The Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary foundation.
Benjamin has presented in numerous conferences worldwide, and published extensively about media arts, and the specificity of curating emerging art forms.
