Íñigo Bilbao combines art and standard medical and industrial engineering tools.
Computed Axial Tomography (CAT) is a medical imaging method to generate a three-dimensional image of the inside of an object from a large series of two-dimensional X-ray images taken around a single axis of rotation.
These very same data can also be used for artistic purposes. The goal is to experiment with the unexplored creative potential of medical hardware and software when applied in combination with 3D modelling software and rapid-prototyping machines.
Some of the tasks are entrusted to machines which leave their print on the final work with pixels, scan lines, laser cutting and interferences that resemble the grain of a photograph.
Íñigo Bilbao depicts both the changing and perishable outer appearance of the model and the more solid and lasting internal structure of its bone structure.
