USED Clothing
Martin Mairinger (AT)

The “USED Clothing” project adds a virtual component to clothing's function as a bearer of information. RFID chips are sewn into second-hand garments; this makes it possible for an owner to store information in digital form to the item of clothing itself as well as to read the communiques left behind by previous owners. An unsettling paraphrase of the way new interfaces are enabling surveillance and control technologies to move in on us closer and closer.“USED Clothing” is the winning project in [the next idea] art and technology grant competition sponsored by voestalpine and will premiere at the Ars Electronica Festival.
