John Maeda develops software to be able to realize his conceptualizations of new forms of visual expression. For example, the contents of a packet of salt are strewn on the glass screen of a scanner and a series of scans is made of them. Then, his custom-developed software determines the number of salt crystals (approximately 70,000). In this way, images of everyday objects are broken down into pixels and formed into optically new works of art.
