cafebabel.com Prix Ars Electronica 2007 Honorary Mention "Digital Communities"
cafebabel.com was started in 2001 by a group of Erasmus students at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques in Strasbourg, France. Two Italians – Adriano Farano and Nicolo dell’Arciprete – were the driving force behind the creation of the association. From the beginning, cafebabel.com was published in four languages: English, French, Spanish and Italian. Today, the core team is the European central office, made up of ten full-time workers: seven editors-in-chief, one person in charge of partnerships and PR, one in charge of communications and events and one in charge of development. The number of language versions has been growing, with the Catalan version added in 2003, the German version in 2004 and the Polish version in 2006. The network of volunteers is made up of 20 teams in 14 countries.
