Translate.org.za http://translate.org.za/ Prix Ars Electronica 2007 Honorary Mention “Digital Communities”
Translate.org.za started in 2001 when Dwayne Bailey began translating the KDE desktop into Xhosa. His motivation was to provide software in local languages to promote Linux and open-source software. In 2002 it received funding from the Shuttleworth Foundation to do some other languages. In 2004 the South African government funded the completion of translations of Open-Office.org, Mozilla Firefox and Mozilla Thunderbird into all of the country’s eleven languages.
