Prix Ars Electronica 2007 Honorary Mention “Digital Communities”

Women on Web has been developed by Women on Waves (http://www.womenonwaves.org), a Dutch non-profit organization founded in 1999. Its mission is to prevent unsafe abortions and empower women to exercise their human right to physical and mental autonomy. Women on Waves operates a mobile clinic on a ship that sails to countries where abortion is illegal. The website was launched in April 2006. Since then, the number of unique visitors has grown to almost 15,000 per month. Almost 400 people have shared their story, almost 1,000 donations have been made and the helpdesk now replies to about 900 e-mails per month.
