New Views of Humankind
Open Days at the Ars Electronica Center
January 2 to 4, 2009

This age we live in is one dominated more than ever by science and technology. The new imaging methods used in the neurosciences observe our brain as it thinks. They show us how perception, emotions and intelligence function, and attempt to explain how our consciousness originates. Molecular biologists and genetic engineers are decoding the elementary building blocks of life. They’re manipulating life, and creating artificial life forms. New cultural techniques are emerging in the ever more tightly-knit global networks of digital technologies. Engineers are constructing machines that imitate human capabilities. And with the launch of the space telescope, we’re peering far beyond our own solar system into the depths of space and time. The findings and insights coming to light thereby are beginning to permanently change our picture of the world and of the people who inhabit it.
