Center Exhibition: Carnivore - Black and White
Mark Napier, RSG/USA (Radical Software Group)

Inspired by Carnivore, the FBI’s e-mail surveillance system, CarnivorePE, the surveillance tool developed by RSG, distributes data flows to an unlimited number of creative interfaces. RSG had no desire to merely copy the FBI software with its many shortcomings. Instead, its aim was to inject a new, progressive form of politics back into ‘packet sniffing,’ a fundamentally destabilizing and transformative technology. It was necessary to come up with a new purpose for the use for data surveillance, one that breaks out of the hero/terrorist dilemma—after all, hackers are said to be either one or the other. The dream of a future use of networked data.
