If the control of the musculature by the brain has been impaired, the nervous system can be activated by means of electrical impulses. The stimulation is applied by electrodes either through the skin or, via implantable devices, directly to a nerve. Stroke patients often suffer weak foot dorsiflexion because the central nervous system is no longer able to activate the peronaeus nerve. The ActiGait® foot lifter stimulator implant assumes the task of initiating the lifting action of the foot when walking. Thanks to restoration of muscle flexion, the patient’s ability to walk improves significantly: his/her foot no longer drags when striding.
