38911 Basic Bytes Free
Kathrin Meralla (AT)
Honorary Mention Prix Ars Electronica 1998 "Cybergeneration u19 - freestyle computing"

38911 Basic Bytes Free is an abstract Basic program for the C 64 and serves as a demonstration of meaningless calculations, loops, words on obsolete equipment. The computer industry and computer art are still largely dominated by a generation that is not yet able to really take the computer for granted. For them it is still a very special tool. It is the view of our younger generation, though, that it is time to put an end to computer utilitarianism. We want to enter into a century, in which the computer is not merely a tool. My work is thus a free, meaningless, almost dada-like game. The computer is liberated from the necessity of purpose. It is no longer the software or the installation, but the computer itself, liberated from meaningfulness, that is the art work.
