Asymptote Douglas Edric Stanley/USA
Taking Heinrich Kleist’s essay “On the Marionette Theater” as its point of departure, Asymptote examines the paradoxical relationship played out via strings or wires between a marionette and the puppeteer manipulating it—a weightless object assumes the emotional weight of its operator. When a visitor pulls strings, a series of interactive video images projected onto the walls of the installations react to these interventions: appearing, disappearing and evolving according to the rhythm of the interactor’s gesture.
