Philipp Strahl (AT)
Prix Ars Electronica 2001 Honorary Mention "Cybergeneration u19 - freestyle computing"

This sound compositing symbolizes the journey of a data packet through the Internet, how it is shifted back and forth by control signals and servers, in order to finally arrive at its destination; extended to a good three minutes. For this purpose, I downloaded some pictures from various sites and freely accessible data from FTP servers, so that I could open them as WAV files, as sounds, manipulate them and play with them. Putting them in sequences and sampling them resulted in the rhythm that I like to call the “Pulsation of the Internet”. There is a simple, but seemingly random melody flowing along in this, which disappears towards the end. Maybe a kind of “guardian angel” for a data packet?
