Maywa Denki—who, meanwhile, have attained true pop star status in Japan—are developing a new type of musical instrument and absurd music constructions, whereby mechanical instruments are played by electromagnets and motors. Nevertheless, players are directly linked to their instruments and trigger sound through their movements. Music in the Digital Age as a mechanical, substantial process.
