HONORARY MENTION
A State of Silence
Michela Mollia
(1983-84)
One listens and therefore learns, only in a state of attention, a state of silence in which this whole background is in abeyance, is quiet, then, it seems to me, it is possible to communicate. J. Krishnamurti The sound material of "A State of Silence" derives from a systematic andpeculiar use of Frequency Modulation digital sound synthesis. With this technic it is possible to specify a radio between the career and modulating frequencies such that the components of the resulting sound are spaced apart at a particular interval. Following this principle, different timbral mixtures have been created whose career frequencies are related by the same interval as the spectral components.
The result is a coherence between vertical and internal intervallic structure. The piece has been realized using the facilities of the Computer Music Centre at Simon Fräser University (Burnaby, British Columbia).
