HONORARY MENTION
Highway
John Hudak
The Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, which leads to the Brooklyn Bridge, runs beneath the building that my family lives in. We have felt the occasional vibrations of large trucks, especially at night, when there is less traffic and they can travel fast.
Our building sits high above ground level on what would be considered a third shelf of a two-tiered highway: our building sits on top...directly below is one tier of traffic travelling west, and below that one tier travelling east. I found a large support for the shelf that our building sits on, and attached contact microphones to collect the strongest vibrations.
The resultant source recordings were similar to what you would get by recording with an open-air microphone ... harsh and unpleasant. Through a series of filterings, I distilled these sounds down to rhythmic impressions of the highway. edition … viii (Atlanta, Georgia USA) (500 copies)
