HONORARY MENTION
In Ice, Mirror
Rolf Enström
Rolf Enström (S), born 1951, studied musicology and philosophy and started to compose computer music at EMS 1972. His multimedia piece "Myr" was first performed at the ISCM festival in Athens 1979, and the works in collaboration with the photographer Thomas Hellsing have been performed extensively over the years.
"In Ice, Mirror" was commissioned by the Swedish Radio Corp. and was premiered at "Cosmonova" at the Stockholm Electronic Music Festival 1993. The composition is grouped around a transformation of two voices which are melted in a surrounding of ice, earth and wood.
The sound recordings have been processed in various ways with DSP-techniques, sampling-sequencing and processed again after mixing. My wife and my eldest son had, at the time the recordings of their voices took place, very similar timbre in certain registers of their voices. This was very practical when I made transformations between their voices. The piece deals with spatial dimensions, and the best listening result is obtained in the middle between two loudspeakers or by listening with headphones.
