The both real-life and animated film Leap into the Unknow was modelled after Stefan Mittlböck-Jungwirth’s hand-drawn animated film “Die Heimfahrt” [“The Journey Home”]. First we developed four different screenplays. Leap into the Unknown, a skater romance came in first. The entire story was first filmed with real people, edited and given a provisional soundtrack. Then these sequences had to be broken down into their individual frames, scanned and printed out. These frames formed the basis for the drawings. Altogether 833 individual pictures were painted or drawn. Over 30 pupils avidly did the work during the summer semester. The resulting frames were then scanned, animated and combined with the real-life shots.
