HONORARY MENTION
Risk
Gert-Jan Prins

2003’s Risk is an electronic composition based on the digital reorganisation of music materials using Digidesign’s Protools multitrack editing application. Risk's source work is generated using customized transmitters that feed back on themselves.

An artist working in a mutation tradition of David Tudor’s manipulated circuit boxes, Prins’ homemade creations "spit, fizz, judder, let off steam, ripple and pulse with analogue and sometimes ear-splitting precision," according to Phil England, who profiled Prins in the January 2003 edition of The Wire. A drummer who has spent the last several years customizing consumer audio circuitry, Prins works with a sound-generating system based on four distinct transmitters and receivers whose output signals are routed into a mixing desk, and according to Prins, “four laboratory square-wave generators which can manipulate the chain of feedback giving the rhythmic sounds, which I can also make with the radio boxes themselves.”
