HONORARY MENTION
Anne:Hamburg
Anne Laplantine
Anne: Hamburg was recorded with a guitar, using the only program I have on my computer: Cakewalk, which is a simple multi-track recorder. The experiment for me was to use this program in a wrong way; I recorded single chords and guitar notes separately, one after the other, instead of playing the whole track. Then I cut these separate tunes into little pieces that I randomised until I discovered a possible logic of melodies and rhythms. I was interested in the confrontation between the accidents created by this random process and my possible control over them.
I contrasted these two processes: recording sound after sound, then putting these sounds in a precise place; and cutting these sounds and randomizing the fragments all over, like raindrops, without listening to the result during the operation. The first approach was like a classical composition for me, the second like contemporary writing, including incidents and errors.
