HONORARY MENTION
Radio_Copernicus. Das deutsch-polnische Künstlerradio
Sabine Breitsameter, Robert Gawlowski

Radio_Copernicus, a radio station for German and Polish artists, was on air and online from July 15 to December 31, 2005.

Its aim was to provide artists with access to the medium of radio and help them obtain the frequencies and broadcasting time to which they were entitled. In doing so, the station opposed the prevalent concept of radio, one which regards the medium as a self-contained system of programmatic formats and invariable contents. This was the basic idea behind Radio_Copernicus and it gave the station its initial impulse and momentum. Focal points of its programme were electro-acoustic art forms, radio art, performances, new literature, as well as current cultural and societal debates and discourses.

The search for participants occurred in interaction between the two neighbouring countries. The station had no permanent location, but was mobile. It zigzagged back and forth, moving three times, first from a broadcasting location in Stralsund/ Germany (July/August 2005) to Warsaw/Poland (September 2005), then back to Berlin/Germany (October 2005) and finally to Wroclaw/Poland (December 2005). It collaborated with the Stralsund garage festival, Warsaw Autumn, Dis_Positionen (Academy of the Arts Berlin), and the symposium Talking Back to Radio in Wroclaw, which was organized by Radio_Copernicus itself. A network of artists, organisers and listeners emerged, and this put radio as a medium in a larger context.

Radio_Copernicus ran on local and temporary FM frequencies, as well as online at www.radiocopernicus.org It was broadcast in German, Polish and English, 24 hours a day.
