dotSUB provides tools that change language barriers into cultural bridges. By putting seamless video subtitling technology into the hands of individuals, dotSUB tools make stories from every culture accessible to every culture, fostering intercultural experience, communication, and connection.

The concept for dotSUB was born in early 2004 after we saw Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 911, and realized that if one film in English could possibly impact on the outcome of a US presidential election, what would happen in the world if all film, TV and videos could be easily and inexpensively made available on the web in all languages. Our goal was to create a browserbased tool, as simple to use as the Google search bar, which required no training and could be used in a wiki/open-source way by anyone bi-lingual between any language pair. All of this, of course, is conditional on the permission of the rights holder.

dotSUB has created a unique set of web-based tools that are used to render text into multiple languages and onto moving images. The final subtitled film products can be delivered in webbased streaming video, DVD, or videotape formats, from high resolution to low resolution. This dotSUB technology provides translators with web-based access to target films, “timestamped” transcripts of dialogue, and an easy process and interface to enter language-pair translations.
