HONORARY MENTION
Herinnerdingen – Things to remember

Herinnerdingen is an innovative interactive website on which children can create their own monument in images and sound for a beloved one who has passed away. The website’s concept is also intended to serve as a new tool for (self)therapies dealing with loss and mourning. In the past year we have collected the hundreds of monuments in cooperation with therapists connected to the “Achter de regenboog foundation” who specialize in mourning.

The homepage is a mosaic made out of almost 1000 pictures. Behind each picture there is a story told by a child. On the site your cursor acts as a magnifying glass. With the magnifying glass you can go and look for the stories behind the pictures. The word that appears when you move over a photo is the title/name that a child has given his or her monument. When you click on the photo, the monument appears. Everyone up to the age of 18 can make a monument.

The total mosaic looks different every day. For instance, on the day of death of Henk’s grandfather, who was a farmer, the mosaic was programmed to construct the image of a cow out of all the pictures in it. The more people contribute to the site, the bigger the database will be and the better the software will succeed in forming the image of the cow.

With the help of four parameters you can search for a selection of monuments that are relevant to you. The keywords are: cause of death, age and the way you are related to the deceased (brother, grandfather etc). If you want to comment on the monument you can click on the envelope.
