HONORARY MENTION
Videobrücke Berlin-Stockholm (5 punkt 1)
Sabine Ercklentz, Andrea Neumann

The performance Videobrücke Berlin-Stockholm (5 punkt 1) was a composition commissioned by the EMS (Institute of Electroacoustic Music in Sweden) for Art's Birthday in the Moderna Museet, Stockholm. The work was premiered there on January 17, 2008.

Since the 1990s, a worldwide telecommunications network has been established. With this network, artists communicate with one another via the Internet to celebrate Art's Birthday every year. As fitting for the occasion, we were invited to play at two different locations synchronously - in Berlin and Stockholm - and to transmit the sounds and images via live streaming. Since we both live in Berlin and have worked as a duo here for years, we thought it would be more interesting to stage a "fake live streaming" that would play with the aesthetics of digital disturbances and reflect the audience's expectations of a live (streaming) event.

When we first began developing the piece, we had the following questions: What does a live video streaming look like? What kind of digital transmission errors are typical? Which tools are required to simulate these deliberately? What expectations do people have when they attend this kind of concert? Initially we had wanted to present as near perfect an illusion as possible, one that would gradually reveal that it is a deception as the piece progressed. This was why we billed our performance in Stockholm as a live video streaming.
