HONORARY MENTION
The Freesound Project

The Freesound Project is an online community of people who share sound files under a creativecommons license. They share sound files, snippets, loops, etc., but not music.

The goal is to build a sound database large enough to be of interest to sound researchers and artists. In stark contrast to the music industry's increasing focus on controlling intellectual property, the website aims to support an ongoing process of open and legal sound exchange. The features of Freesound are designed to make the sound files on the website easy to index, search and browse. They provide new and interesting ways of accessing these samples, allowing users to

- browse the sounds in new ways using keywords, a "sounds-like" type of browsing and more

- upload and download sounds to and from the database, under the same creative-commons license

- interact with fellow sound artists.

The Freesound Project is coordinated by Xavier Serra, director of the Music Technology Group of the UPF of Barcelona, with the enthusiastic collaboration of quite a number of users from the community. It is maintained and administrated by Bram de Jong (its original creator) and other MTG researchers.
