Competition: Journey to the Depths of the Seven Seas
A first for the Ars Electronica Center on November 22: the FIRST LEGO League, an exciting robot competition for youngster age 10 to 16!

This regional play-off is premiering at the Ars Electronica Center in Linz thanks to cooperation with the School Board of the Province of Upper Austria. The FIRST LEGO League is organized by “HANDS on TECHNOLOGY e.V.” in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Hungary. This year’s theme is “Ocean Odyssey,” an in-depth encounter with oceanic exploration. Competing teams use sensors, motors, a multitude of multicolored LEGO building blocks and ingenious software to construct their own independently active robots, with which they carry out tricky assignments in the depths of the deep blue seas. Young people demonstrate their technical talents in Lego League competitions in a total of 22 countries in the Americas, Europe and Asia.

FIRST LEGO League is a program combining science and fun for youngsters between the ages of 10 and 16. The aim of the competition is to kindle enthusiasm for science and technology on the part of “tomorrow’s generation.” Kids and young people learn to deal with complex tasks, to work in teams, to jointly develop solutions and to creatively implement them. In an atmosphere of sporting competition, contestants get acquainted with real-life conditions prevailing in the world of work—they conduct research, plan, program and test an autonomous robot in order to master a prescribed task.
18 groups from Upper Austria and Vienna (SAP School Group) are taking part. The names these crews have chosen—for instance, “Legomatiker,” “Pötti on tour” and “Desperados”—make it clear that a thrilling show-down is in the offing.

The competition venue is the Ars Electronica Center’s Sky Media Loft. A live broadcast and practice sessions will be held in Lobby. The Museum of the Future will be closed to the public on the day of the event.

The competition is scheduled for November 22, 2005 from 11 AM to 5 PM. Media outlet representatives are cordially invited to attend. Please RSVP by calling 0043.664.81 26 156 or via e-mail to wolfgang.bednarzek@aec.at.
