Prix Ars Electronica 2003 Winners - background information 2,714 entries constitute a new participation record 6 Golden Nicas and 6 x 2 Distinctions for the winners
With the new all-time record of 2,714 entries from 85 countries in 2003, the 17th edition of the Prix Ars Electronica Computer Arts Competition has once again underlined its status as the international top showcase for the cyberarts.
In the competition categories of Interactive Art, Net Vision / Net Excellence, Digital Musics and Computer Animation / Visual Effects, the competition organized by the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation ORF within the setting of the Ars Electronica Festival concentrates on the core sectors of digital media design. In addition, the youth competition "cybergeneration – u19 freestyle computing" presents a common open platform for the generation that was the first to grow up with the computer as a medium, and that will carry on its development into the future.
The results of the Prix Ars Electronica — whose winners were selected by five juries of international experts — indicate the current state-of-the-art in the intersection between the arts, science, and research. From a total of 2,761 entries, the five expert juries selected 6 Golden Nica and 12 Distinction award winners, and awarded a total of 61 Honorary Mentions.
Continuity as a Factor in Success "By virtue of its continuity since 1987 and through the integration of the competition into the Ars Electronica Festival that will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2004, the Prix Ars Electronica has become an internationally renowned and persistent seismograph of artistic expression within the rapid development of digital media. Not only does the unbroken history of the Prix, initiated by the ORF Upper Austria, determine its importance in terms of cultural policy, but the competition also constitutes an important contribution to the cultural profile of the region", as the Managing Director of ORF Upper Austria, Dr. Helmut Obermayer put it. " Furthermore, with the youth competition 'u19 freestyle computing', the ORF has initiated an important investment in the future."
