Goodbye Privacy - Ars Electronica Festival 2007
(Vienna, August 23, 2007) A new culture of everyday life is now upon us, bracketed by the angst-inducing scenarios of seamless surveillance and the zest we bring to staging our public personas via digital media. One in which everything seems to be public and nothing’s private anymore. Panopticon or consummate individual freedom of expression? At symposia, exhibitions, performances and interventions, the 2007 Ars Electronica Festival will delve into what the public and private spheres have come to mean and the interrelationship that now exists between them.

Things will get underway with “Fundamental Rights in the Digital World,” an international conference being organized jointly with the Austrian Association of Judges. A symposium curated by Ina Zwerger and Armin Medosch will then stage an inquiry into how the private sphere is being updated before the backdrop of terror and Web 2.0. “Day in the City” culminates in an observation & control scenario encompassing the entire territory within Linz’s city limits: a fly-over will generate more than 4,400 surveillance photos and a group portrait deluxe! Among the newly-visible features: “Second City” on Linz’s Marienstraße that Ars Electronica is morphing into a portal between artificiality and reality.
GOODBYE PRIVACY. The 2007 Ars Electronica Festival. September 5-11, 2007.
All over Linz.
