All of Linz – A Group Portrait from Above
The big moment arrived last weekend. The group portrait of Linz that was to have been staged in conjunction with this year's Ars Electronica Festival and then had to be postponed on account of cloud cover was finally carried off. Now, the first of these amazing images have arrived, and they’re getting rave reviews!

(Linz, September 21, 2007) On Sunday, September 16, Ars Electronica invited the people of Linz to take part in a group portrait to be snapped from an altitude of approximately 1,100 meters. This picture of the entire city was produced by a small aircraft specially equipped for orthographic photography and operated by the Salzburg-based company fmm. During a four-hour flyover, this eye-in-the-sky took more than 4,000 high-resolution images of Linz, its inhabitants and the many interesting activities they planned especially for the occasion.

Linz Group Portrait – A Tremendous Success

The group surveillance photo shoot turned out to be a big hit all around! More than 150 projects were formally registered during the time leading up to the event. The list of participating companies, government agencies, and artistic & cultural institutions is long indeed. An initial viewing of the results quickly made it clear that the images’ quality exceeded even the organizer’s most optimistic expectations and the number of projects actually implemented—artworks, messages and logos—ran into the hundreds.

4,000 photos will be on display at the end of September

On Saturday, September 22, the first 50 high-resolution images of the entire City of Linz can be viewed by the public in the Ars Electronica Center. All 4,000 will be accessible in the Museum of the Future by the end of September.

In order to make sure that we don’t overlook any projects during our examination and assessment, all crews who participated in the group portrait project are requested to send a brief description of their work and its address to gruppenfoto@aec.at. The aerial surveillance image of it will then be published online at WikiMap Linz. http://www.aec.at/wikimap/

If you’d like to publish photos of your preparations for the Linz group portrait, please submit these as well to gruppenfoto@aec.at
